For the past decade, the international trade arena has undergone dramatic far-reaching changes and expansion. The combination of outsourcing, roles switching and globalization, accelerated by the advent of information technology, is radically challenging the dynamics of traditional trade relationships among the world’s economies. This paradigm of a truly global interconnected marketplace where service jobs can slide across borders with ease presents both great opportunities and risks if economic planners cannot adapt to the rapidly evolving commercial environment. The Digital Age, with all its profound implications to the rapid changes of lifestyle and consumer patterns is upon us.  Are we ready?

In the international trade arena, our state not only has to compete with the rest of the world’s economies, it is also bidding against the rest of the 49 states. The past strategy and action plan adopted would benefit from a fresh update and revision exercise, in order to respond to the new realities of the new economy.

When swimming with the competition where the strongest survives, and the separating lines are increasingly blurred, one with the most adaptable and practical solution will win.  In the era of social media rage, entity that possess a distinct image with enough differentiation will be successful, especially in the world’s culture of cutthroat competition. Distinct image with memorable branding creates a beneficial value-added proposition that can attract consumers to products and services that can support a higher labor cost structure, especially for the developed economies.

In light of the game changing paradigm that is taking place in the world’s trade regime, and to properly prepare for the foreseeable challenges arise along the path of our international trade development, it is imperative to rethink radically the successful strategies of the past, so as to maintain the leadership position in economic development strategy and execution. To be successful in the long run, the first essential step is to take concrete inventory of what we really has to offer, now – both as a place in which to do business and in terms of products or services for export – and then match that inventory with nations (economies) and international businesses that have the greatest need or demand for those benefits. That kind of matching is crucial to getting the most benefit from a tight budget that does not allow prospecting in low-yielding ground. This short brief can only provide a few quick glimpse at how our strengths can be effectively deploy to the rapid changing international market needs.

Without getting into the full specifics of our current strengths and possible inventory, it is fair to say that we have great strength in our reputation as a champion of responsible economic growth with a desirable living environment. That aura of expertise is highly marketable in the current world’s marketplaces.

The main purpose of taking inventory is to accurately discover how many and what kinds of export-ready constituent companies we might have and should be working with. This exercise also requires creation of a proprietary matrix in order to evaluate the constituent companies’ level of export readiness and match them with customized scheme for sturdy growth in various economic regions. Only after learning thorough details about the needs and the profiles of the constituent companies, can limited resources be allocate efficiently. This exercise can also expose what level of commitment should be allocated to which regional markets, without blindly following what has been done “traditionally”, for some outmoded reasons.The economic developers can then, draw up a factual and comprehensive work plan with target goals, and execute with meticulous precision.
